Work should be considered sacred. There is nothing better than work.
Across different faiths – Islam, Christianity, and many others, people are encouraged to pray multiple times a day. Why? I am not saying you must do the same. Remembering God is enough. But the deeper reason is simple : activity is involved.
In India, we have a system called pranams, bowing down to God. How do you do that? The same process – by bowing down, touching your head to the ground and offering respect to the Supreme Being. This action is important.
Spirituality isn’t about sitting in a lazy trance imagining yourself in Samadhi. Samadhi is the highest state of spiritual fulfilment – a trance state often described by Sufis as well. But even Samadhi is reached through practice, discipline, and sustained effort.
Work Begins at Home
Work must begin early, and it must begin at home. If parents do not inculcate the habit of work in youngsters, it becomes difficult for them to learn it later.
It is important to have discussions with your children. Do not expect them to simply do what you want. Talk to them so they understand the importance of work.
Why Beautiful Cities Exist
From ancient times to today, when you see a beautiful city and think, “Oh, this is so beautiful,” why is it so?
Yes, people may have a sense of beauty but more importantly, people have worked on it.
I can sit in my office and think about it but when you build a fortress, an office, or any structure, someone carries the stones. Someone fits them. Craftsmen shape them. A vision becomes reality only through work.
Build Your Inner Monument
Consider your own life as a beautiful monument – one that should stand even after you have disappeared from this earth, which we all will, at some point.
So you must also work: gather the stones, bring together what is required, and build a beautiful structure in the mind. When the physical body is gone, it is the mind, the ideas, the impact, that will be remembered.
Why do we still remember the great philosophers?
Not because they built physical structures, but because they made life better. They taught others how to lead a wonderful life.
And for all of this, work, not laziness is the answer.
Work as a Path to Fulfilment
From the very beginning, work should be given great importance. Working toward goals that benefit others should slowly take charge of one’s life. Then, you gain ultimate fulfillment in this life and in the spiritual life as well.
