While Sri M has championed environmental causes for decades, the Jal Seva Pledge was first formally conceptualized and administered in 2020 with the official launch of the Satsang Jal Seva Sangatan (SJSS). The pledge is not just a civic promise but is intended as a spiritual commitment to treat water as a “sacred trust” rather than a mere commodity.
Notable dates on which the Jal Seva pledge has been taken by a large number of people, collectively and dispersed across various locations include:
- March 2022: Nationwide on World Water Day, and each subsequent year
- November 2022: Trimbakeshwar, Launch of Aviral Godavari Mission
- October 2023: Nashik, Declaration of Plastic-Free Kumbh 2027
- March 2024: Madurai, Launch of Vaigai Rejuvenation Project
- January-February 2025: Prayagraj, Mahakumbh Mela 2025
- February 2026: Maha Shivaratri, 2800 people in person and online
