
Ayurveda is the oldest system of medicine and a science of life. The predominance of doshas and different permutations bring different physiological changes at various phases of a woman’s life. Ayurveda have mentioned various regimens to be followed at these phases. Here are some commonly used ayurvedic herbs in our daily life and their influence on women’s health.
1. Sesame – तिला (Tila) – Sesamum indicum

Tila is mentioned in almost all classical Ayurvedic texts. The commonly available black sesame is an ancient oil seed that is utilised in Ayurvedic medicines. It is a rejuvenative drug with qualities that enhance vitality, longevity and helps in nourishing body tissues. Looking into the benefits bestowed by sesame in women’s health, it is very helpful at the time of menarche (first occurrence of menstruation). Traditionally sesame oil is given to drink during the time of menarche to strengthen the body and support its well being as she enters the new phase of life. A decoction made of sesame seeds added with jaggery is given to girls who are having amenorrhea (irregular periods). It also helps in preventing premature greying of hair and provides good skin complexion.
2. Garlic – लशुन (Lashuna) – Allium sativum

Garlic is one of the most significant and broadly utilized natural medication for different female issues. A separate chapter has been attributed to explain the benefit of lashuna as food, medicine and rejuvenative drug by acharya kashyapa. By consuming lashuna, stree attains shuddhi and she will be free from rogas affecting waist , pelvis and even never suffer from infertility. Intake of garlic along with boiled milk or any other form will help in good breast milk secretion.
Cumin – जीरक (Jeeraka) – Cuminum cyminum

Since it has a very good digestive property, it is named as Jeeraka. It acts as a purifier of the uterus, promotes breast milk secretion, and supports the health of women during before and after delivery. Jeera water is given to pregnant women for checking nausea. It is used in postpartum conditions to improve uterine involution. A poultice of these seeds helps to reduce swelling of the breast.
4. Fenugreek – मेथिका (Methika) – Trigonella foenumgraecum

Methi is a well known ayurvedic herb, its seed and leaves are commonly used in Indian foods. There are a number of classical formulations in Ayurveda using Fenugreek. Methi seeds are extremely effective against hair fall, dandruff, baldness and hair thinning. Because of its pain relieving property it can be given to women in pain during menstruation. Traditionally methi seeds are soaked in water and taken to relieve menstrual cramps and back ache.
5. Dry Grapes – द्राक्षा (Draksha) – Vitis vinifera

Draksha is considered best among fruit varieties by Ayurvedic classics. Various Ayurvedic formulations with draksha are available pertaining to women’s health. Helps during heavy menstrual bleeding and to retain pregnancy. Black grapes soaked overnight can be taken in the morning, nourishes the body and helps to keep away from anemia to which women are more prone.
6. Coriander – धान्यक (Dhanyaka) – Cortiandrum Sativum

Coriander seeds and fresh leaves play a major role in our cooking across India. It helps to pacify all doshas, especially pitta. Water boiled with coriander seeds and dry ginger powder can be given to women who suffer from poor bleeding and severe cramps during menstruation.
