The word Guru has two syllables, Gu and Ru. Gu is Guhya, hidden, dark, darkness and Ru is a short form of Rudra, the destroyer of darkness. So Guru means one who destroys the darkness. When you say Guru, you are not only talking about your physical Guru, you are also talking about the essence of all teachers.
