When I sit down to study with my teacher, I should do so with the awareness that I do not know, and therefore I am open to understanding. This does not mean being physically lower. The moment I say, “I know,” all enquiry stops. I can no longer truly hear, because I shut my ears with the feeling that I already know. Even if I do hear, I may interpret what is said according to what I think I know, and this too is dangerous.
