Nooranad: Kerala’s Hridyabhoomi

Nestled at a unique tri-junction of Kerala’s Kollam, Alappuzha, and Pathanamthitta districts, the village of Nooranad is far more than a geographical curiosity. This land, historically marking the border between the old kingdoms of Travancore and Edappally Swarupam, is a living tapestry of myth, history, and enduring spiritual traditions.

The Spiritual Identity of Nooranad

The spiritual identity of Nooranad is deeply rooted in its ancient deity, Padanilavasan, revered as the true embodiment of Parabrahma (the ultimate reality). A part of the land is named Padanilam in honor of this divine presence.

Here, one discovers the unique Malanadakal—a system of worship centred around sacred groves on hilltops, remnants of ancient tribal cultures that have miraculously survived the test of time. Lord Shiva is celebrated in a localized form as Malayappuppan within this spiritual paradigm.

Sacred Hilltop Shrines

The landscape of Nooranad is defined by Malanadas, each a hilltop sanctuary pulsating with energy: Peruviruthi Malanada, Kaithakkodu Malanada, Nedumkurunni Malanada, and many others. These sites host a fascinating and diverse pantheon, including Shiva and Parvati in their fierce Kirata forms (divine hunters), Yogeshwara, and local deities like Valiyappoppan and Kochurali.

Idamala and the Kalkuzhi Theertha

Rising in stark contrast to the surrounding ranges is Idamala, a hill resembling the mythical Meru Mountain. For centuries, its peak was sanctified by the Kalkuzhi Theertha—a perennial spring revered as the embodiment of River Ganga, flowing from the matted locks of Lord Shiva.

Legends recount that this sacred land was once visited by the warriors Duryodhana and Karna and has been a hallowed ground for penance, yogic practices, and meditation since time immemorial.

Sri Guru Babaji Temple

The Sri Guru Babaji Temple crowns the Idamala hill, a silent witness to its hoary origins, preserving fragments of rocks from Kalkuzhi Theertha, and creating an unbroken link between the ancient divine manifestation and contemporary worship, a timeless flow of devotion and grace.

The temple is a vibrant spiritual centre drawing people to its sanctum, in all its simplicity and grace. Monthly full-moon meditation sessions unite spiritual seekers and locals alike in a tranquil atmosphere in the sylvan setting of the lush landscape. Traditional celebrations during festive occasions like Vishu and Onam usher in unbridled joy and gratitude for abundant natural resources in the region.

History whispers from hilltops, where ancient deities are worshipped in living traditions, and where the sacred landscape itself tells a story of destruction, preservation, and eternal faith. Nooranad is truly Kerala’s Hridayabhoomi.
