Why Silence Is the Ultimate Leadership Skill Today?

Not every moment demands a response. Some demand reflection. And that distinction defines great leadership.

Sri M spoke at WMG Bharatnomics, where a powerful reminder emerged – original thinking is born in silence. When we rush to respond, we often react, not reflect. Great leaders create space for thought before they create sound. Silence is where ideas are shaped, weighed, and refined.

But leadership is also about timing, knowing when silence empowers and when it becomes inaction. The balance between the two is what creates authority with impact.

Here’s a short QnA with Sri M at WMG Bharatnomics

In Leadership, what are the problems caused by speaking too much?

One problem, the most important problem when you speak too quickly, is that you have not assessed the situation. It looks like a knee-jerk action, you know. So this is one of the biggest problems, that you speak something when you have not really looked into it and explored.

What does silence and pause reveal and teach us?

It is all the science, analytics and all the great scientists who have come to us, all their original thoughts have come when they are in silence, which is why people take off  to a retreat and sit quietly. Even Einstein used to do that in spite of doing many things because it is only when that quietness, thoughts, original thoughts, creative thoughts come to the mind.  Later on, of course, you try to work on them, you manifest them.

Is silence a form of authority?

Now the difficulty is, if the person or the institution you are dealing with understands your stature, that this guy has something in him, then that silence becomes a very important aspect. If they do not know that, they might think that you are not speaking because you don’t know what to say. You see, you have to distinguish between keeping quiet and silence.

True silence happens even when you are talking. Well, authority without to get anything going, authority is required. Some form of authority is required.

But that authority, as we started, should not start talking before the problem is looked at carefully. That will give only negative effects to the whole thing. So it is better to keep quiet sometimes rather than keep saying something.

When does silence become a weakness instead of strength?

When you see that mistakes are being made, when you see that it is time to intervene, then I think silence becomes a mistake. But to understand that, one needs to have a great deal of silent understanding.

Do people trust leaders who are silent?

Now when you say, do people trust, then it becomes a question of whether they are popular or not.

I think some of the greatest people have been quiet. I am going to speak about that. Ramana Maharshi hardly uttered a word. The impact he has even till today is something amazing. How did this happen?

How does silence improve the quality of decisions that leaders make?

Because in silence you are able to measure, you are not actually involved in something, you are able to weigh, you are able to measure, you are able to judge. So the decision that comes after that is bound to be something based on symmetry.
