Sustainable Living, High Thinking: The Satsang Foundation’s gaushalas show the way

The first fortnight of May saw Nepal host a requiem ceremony for the Yala glacier high up in the Langtang mountain of the Himalayas. Glacial melt due to carbon emissions, rising waters, natural disasters are all indicative of the climate crisis facing humanity as temperatures are slated to rise over 1.5 C per year if life continues without taking measures to ensure sustainable living on our planet.

In 2017, Sri M decided to take pro-active steps to help combat climate change with tangible measures in both The Sacred Grove: Centre for Exploring Consciousness in Chowdepalle and the Madanapalle Ashram deep in the rural hinterlands of Andhra Pradesh. He ensured that indigenous cows were brought for both places to sustain the symbiosis between a Gaushala, natural farming and simple satvik food for both kitchens.

Gir, Sahiwal, Rathi, and Tharkapar cows, native to our country were sourced for both centres. In Chowdepalle, the original 6 cows have now multiplied to 20, while the three at the Madanapalle Ashram are now 10. Both kitchens have ample supplies of milk, ghee, and buttermilk besides having biogas for cooking, natural fertiliser for farming, and means to educate surrounding farmers to plough their fields with the help of the cows instead of burning fossil fuels for the purpose.

Housed in rustic Gaushalas with temples dedicated to Lord Krishna and soothing strains of the flute playing in the background as they feed, the cows are cherished and revered at all seasonal festivals in sync with the fecundity of the earth. For the ever-increasing number of visitors, the Gaushalas are a must visit to connect with nature and their pastoral roots.
