The Satsang Gaushalas: A Sacred Sanctuary

The Gaushalas at Madanapalle and The Sacred Grove, Chowdepalle were established with a simple purpose to protect indigenous cows and build a sustainable practice around them.

Lovingly cared for by their caretakers and left free to graze in fodder fields, the cows live in a tranquil environment while they continue to provide enriching milk and milk products to the residents and guests at both locations. Their dung is used to produce biogas as well as manure which helps nourish the surrounding vegetation. At Chowdepalle, calf adoption supports farmers, preserves native breeds, and provides a sanctuary of calm and care. It is indeed a visual treat to view these well-groomed indigenous cows, with their striking eyes and humps, and gorgeous hues.

Our Scintillating Seven celebrate their First Deepavali

Year 2025 has been a phenomenal year, sustaining the circle of life with the birth of the Scintillating Seven at our gaushalas: seven calves, each with unique traits and preferences, ushering in joy and auspiciousness, and delighting everyone with their mischievous antics quite like Lord Krishna himself.

Our oldest is Triveni, Ganga’s daughter, born on 2 March soon after the MahaKumbh Mela concluded and named after the Triveni Sangam at Prayagraj. Cheerful and often ready to playfully fight with the bull calves, she has blossomed into an elegant youngster. Her lively presence fills the Satsang Gaushala with great delight.

Four months down the line, Nandi made his august debut just before Guru Purnima on 5 July as light showers rained down blessings upon him during the evening aarti at the Sri Guru Babaji Temple. Born to Yamuna, he loves all his other ‘mothers’ in the gaushala – seeking their udders with much affection. Walking in the footsteps of Triveni, Nandi often imitates her and wants to be pampered by everyone.

During the auspicious festival of Navaratri, two more calves graced the gaushala nursery. Basava, the son of Sharada, stepped into his new home on 23 September. True to his name, he is very strong and playfully eats mud. Sharada is extremely protective of her son and keeps a watchful eye over him; if he wanders out of her sight, she calls out until she sees him again.

Gauri, the newest baby, was born on Maha Saptami, 28 September. The daughter of Gayatri, she was named after the Divine Mother, epitomizing feminine energy and power. She is very fond of Basava, her closest friend, and gambols around the gaushala, nibbling on grass with her tiny teeth. Basava returns her affection ardently, and their heartwarming friendship adds to the charm of the gaushala.

At The Sacred Grove Gaushala, a wondrous trio rules the gaushala roost. Trishikha was born during the Chaitra Navaratri on 3 April. Daughter of Saraswati, and named after Mother Durga, this doe-eyed beauty with mottled flanks stands tall and proud true to her Gir lineage.

On 9 August, Devi gave birth to a female calf on Shravana Pournima. Named Pournima, this little one is blessed with a lovely, golden brown hue and long ears though she is primarily of Rathi descent and should ideally have an ebony tint.

Closely followed by her companion, Ekadashi, born on 3 September on the occasion of Parivartini Ekadashi, these two little calves complement each other perfectly. Inheriting the grace and beauty of her mother Nandini and grandmother Saraswati, the endearing Ekadashi is quite the divine ascetic, serene and contemplative.
