De-silting debris delivers denizens of Tulai Village from water woes

Revival of silt-ridden lake

Mukyacha Kalambad Lake in Tulai Village, situated about 100 kilometers from Mumbai City, had withered under the weight of silt and debris accumulated till the edge of its banks, denying access to water for domestic use and farming and sparking an exodus of several residents towards the city for financial sustenance.

Concert of like minds

When the Gram Panchayat of Tulai Village commissioned a request for the de-silting of the lake, Team Satsang Jal Seva Sangatan (SJSS) partnered with Indivish Welfare Foundation, a Mumbai-based NGO, to remove 6257 cubic meters of silt in 15 days and enhance water storage capacity. The silt was repurposed to pitch the lake and strengthen its walls and periphery before the onset of the monsoon rains.

Mukyacha Kalambad unbound

Joy was writ large on the faces of the residents as they witnessed the phenomenal results of the renaissance of their lake: resurgence of surrounding wells and borewells; successful cultivation of crops; increase in agricultural produce; a 60 % surge in the local dairy industry, and more importantly, the reunion of families estranged during migration.

Supplying abundant water through the year, this precious gem sparkles in the hearts of the residents.
